What is Advertising?

If your interested in pursuing a career in advertising, you have to develop the habit of recognizing all the print ads, commercials, and other forms of advertising that surround us. I try to do this as often as possible. Either by analyzing a commercial or trying to get at the core of a magazine ad. What I have noticed is that a majority of ads have strayed away from the essential purpose of advertising.

The purpose of advertising is to sell. To develop a resonating message that sells the greatest consumer benefit. However, most of the ads that I have recently seen concentrate more on the creative and sometimes forget to highlight the benefit: the reason why I should even think about buying the product.

We as advertisers, most not let creativity drown the purpose of advertising. Let us not forget that our clients pay a lot of money to develop a message that sells their product, through the greatest consumer benefit, in a creative way - not the other way around.
